Électricité de France (EDF) was ranked first among the world's leading electric utilities companies in 2023, with annual sales of 150.8 billion U.S. dollars. Italy's Enel followed, with sales revenue of 132.2 billion U.S. dollars.
What is an electric utility?
Electric utilities are companies involved in the provision of electricity to customers. An electric utility company can be involved in one or more of the steps included in this process, namely generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity. Recent years have seen utility companies across the globe increasing their utilization of renewable energy sources. The largest renewable energy companies worldwide are located in the United States and Europe.
European utilities leading the pack
Six out of the top 10 leading electric utilities based on sales are located in Europe. E.ON, headquartered in Germany, had annual sales of approximately 90 billion U.S. dollars as of May 2024. The British branch of E.ON is a member of the Big Six in the UK.
